A Little Polo History:

The polo shirt began with what was called a tennis shirt in the eighteen and nineteen hundreds. Players wore long-sleeved, stiff shirts, with long pants and formal neck ties! This outfit made for somewhat difficult play and a French champion, René Lacoste, came through with a new idea. He made loose-knit, un-starched cotton shirts for the court. How did it become a 'polo' shirt? Well, it was in the 1930's. The sport of polo (a team sport played on horseback) was quite popular at the time as well as tennis, so naturally, the polo players saw how much of an improvement this new tennis shirt was for tennis players and adopted it as their own. With the popularity of golf on the rise, this same old tennis shirt, turned polo shirt, is now often called a 'golf' shirt!
